Which email clients support embedded video
There is currently no universal standard approach to embedding video within email. This has led to each of the email clients adopting an approach which is specific to their email service.
The video file format that is embedded into each recipients email is ultimately determined by the email client which they are opening the email within.
Optimizing the multimedia file for each email client
With the objective of delivering the highest quality video email experience to all recipients our Video Email Platform creates more than 20 multimedia files from the source video you upload to the platform. These 20+ versions are created to enable us to deliver the multimedia file that is compatible with each email client, thus ensuring the highest quality video email experience for each recipient.
To achieve this our Video Email Platform detects the email client which the recipient is using and then serves the multimedia file within the email, which is compatible with the email client detected.
We additionally take into consideration the connection type, device and browser on which they are receiving the email, as these also influence the multimedia file that we serve to each recipient.
What multimedia formats are served into video emails?
There are 3 groups of files that we serve in each email, relative to the factors of device, email client, browser and network connection:
- Animation GIF optimized for email
- High quality animation (Animated Portable Network Graphics (ANPG) and WEBP formats)
- HD Video
For each of these groups, specific multimedia files are created, with different resolutions for mobile, tablet or PC/Mac, different characteristics and optimized codecs for each one of them.
Video email is not a one size fits all, with no universal standard, compatibility is the ongoing challenge.
No universal standard for video email formats
There is currently no universal standard approach to embedding video within email. This has lead to each of the email clients adopting an approach which is specific to their email service.
Each of the email service providers has elected a video format that is their preferred format when embedded with an email. These formats ranging from a GIF through to full HD video, and all formats in between. The net result is that there is a high variance in the quality of the video experience in the inbox of the recipient.
